Summer lawn care basics
June 30, 2021

Summertime is for enjoying the outdoors in all of its glory. Can you smell the barbecue? The days are brighter, and the children’s laughter is contagious. The energy is amazing, and we are finally going on the vacations we deserved.

You will spend more time outdoors, that is for sure. So it means that you need to take better care of your lawn in order to enjoy it with all your senses! Can you imagine soft, green grass in your yard? You can walk on the grass, have a picnic, or enjoy stargazing when the nighttime comes. Dark green grass and a bright blue sky are exactly what your lawn needs and what you want to see this year.

So which steps do you need to take in order to enjoy an amazing summer lawn?

Water your lawn properly

When it’s summertime, it is important to remain hydrated. You can assume that this also applies to your lawn as well. The truth is, grass and plants have their own mechanisms to combat the summer heat.  You probably noticed that in times of drought, the grass goes brown. It can be restored to its former glory, of course, if you water it correctly.

So during the summer months, remember to water your lawn. Water it often but not too much where your yard turns into a giant puddle. Make sure to do it thoroughly so it coats your entire lawn with a good soak. It would be enough to water your lawn either early in the morning or during the evening hours.

You need to avoid scorching temperatures that would steal the precious moisture from plants nearly instantly. Try not to use hoses or sprinklers and try drip irrigation instead. It will provide enough moisture and a stable flow.

Make sure that your grass is healthy

Your grass needs a lot of nutrients as well in order to be healthy. You need to keep your soil aerated enough to make sure that your grass is getting enough oxygen. Regularly check the pH balance of your soil.

If you think you missed the season of fertilization, you are wrong. Your lawn can be fertilized in the summer as well. Just find the one suitable for the summer months and make sure they have all the nutrients.

Make sure to remove the weeds

With nature blossoming, you will soon start noticing that you have some unwanted visitors in the form of different weeds.

If you leave them, they will steal the precious nutrients your plants should be getting to keep them growing. Remove weeds regularly and keep things in order. They tend to grow really fast. Keep your garden in order.

Decorate your patio with colorful flowers

You will spend a lot of time on your deck or patio, so make sure that you decorate it with vibrant and colorful plants. Yet, you will need to give them extra care once you set your miniature flower garden outside. Water your plants regularly, help them retain enough moisture, and avoid keeping them in the direct sunlight. Keep them in the shade when needed.

I like to mow it, mow it

Moving is also one of the most important steps in keeping your summer lawn healthy and looking good. We know that you might be tempted to mow the grass short, but that is not a good practice in summer. You need to learn some clever mowing techniques. Avoid mowing during extreme heat – the grass may get stressed from the heat, turning brown in color.

During the summer months, lawn mowing height should be raised or about one inch.

This practice ensures better insulation from the summer heat and can help you reduce the loss of moisture.

If you are taking a vacation

You need to think about your lawn as well. Consider investing in an irrigation system that will help keep your yard optimally hydrated while you are away. There won’t be any unpleasant surprises once you get back home.

Native plant garden for summer

It is always best to work with plants that are native to your region. What is natural always works the best. Native plants will adapt quickly to the weather conditions. Just make sure that your native plants are drought tolerant and resistant.
